Japanese as a Second Language Course Level 1-1
This course is the first semester of the one-year Japanese language sequence
designed to train first-time learners to become familiar with basic Japanese.
The emphasis of the course will be on both oral and written communication through
development of skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness.
By the end of the year, students will be able to read and write Hiragana fluently,
manage several communicative tasks in social situations, and will be able to express
themselves in straightforward situations on familiar topics.
Students will be quizzed through the materials in the two textbooks. At the end of the
year, a speaking final will be administered with a written component (on genkou youshi),
encompassing all the spoken skills learned in the year.

- Instructor: Caitlyn Kolesar
- Requisites: No pre-requisites.
- Eligible Participants: Ages 8 to 15.
- Location: Mesa Community College, Dobson & Southern Campus. Please come to the Children’s Center on the first day to confirm classroom number.
- Class Hour: 9:00-11:00 am (45 min. x 2, 9:15-10:00, 10:10-10:55)

- Speaking practice time with partners/groups
- Children’s song (can be tied to seasons or Theme of the day)
- Writing practice
- Cultural activity (origami, etc)
